Welcome to the home of the mighty Bushmen! ***AUSTRALIA DAY PICTURES ADDED TO PHOTO GALLERY***
In the words of Bill Lawry Its all happening folks! The 1st graders went down, only just I might say to Southport Labrador on Saturday to sit in 2nd position with 2 games remaining and 7 points ahead of 3rd. With a home semi up for grabs a top two position is vital so we travel to Helensvale this week with one thing in mind – the six points. On a brighter note the Magoos played themselves back into contention with a stirring win against the top of the ladder Tigers to now sit 4 points behind 4th spot with two very winnable games ahead. The action is hot on the field and also off it going by our red faces night on Saturday, what is it with sportsmen wanting to dress up like females? It happened again Saturday with a few acts and many a laugh was had but amongst all the rubbish we were lucky enough to witness a future star of the stage in young Straalen who sang the house down. Watch this space as we update you on his hopeful progress thru the Australia’s got talent series later in the year. I think Frank Sinatra even looked down on Saturday night and gave Straalen a big tick of approval.
Our 20 20 boys keep marching on, undefeated with 1 game left of the home and away with a close shave against Burleigh on Sunday, all out for 94 and Burleigh cruising at 4 for 66 but some fine catching from Fraser Gregor and 3 for 4 from Shep saw the Bullsharks all out for 74. We are assured of a spot in the semi now in two weeks time.
The Juniors have 3 weeks left before finals and 17s are sitting 3rd - 5th & 6th with a chance to have two teams in the action. 15s are sitting 1st - 5th and 11th. 14s are in 2nd spot. 13s 3rd – 8th – 11th & 12th. 12s are 5th & 7th so looks like quiet a few teams will be playing finals getting some extra experience to help with their development.
On the juniors we are occasionaly criticised or questioned as to why we don’t pick our best team in every grade to guarantee finals places and potential premierships. With so many teams from 12 thru 17s it is a balancing act and our philosophy is weighted more to development and enjoyment than purely win at all costs for silverware. With our numbers there is no doubt that we could be sitting on top in all grades or thereabout if we desired, but would that be the best result for the majority of the players and their personal development into senior cricket?
At the end of the day it’s a judgement call but the committee, junior coaches and coordinators think this is the best model to produce cricketers who will continue to love and play the game for many years at all levels and also give the gifted the grounding they need to be able to make it to the top if they decide to pursue cricket as a career. Good luck to all teams this week. See you on the deck - Go the Bushmen! Norm
