Selected Past Round Summary

 Round 2 2009/10 (incl round 1-4 for 4th and 5th grade)

Round 2

Four weeks into the season and we are currently 7 from 8 for our top four sides.  Norm (Barack Obama) Goedheer was so exited when receiving the results, he had to be physically restrained from immediately returning from Europe!!!

ONES

A change of name from the Bushmen to the “Boa Constrictors” may be in order after the Ones strangled the life out of Runaway Bay on their home ground.

Batting first, the innings was saved by magnificent 73 not out from Josh (the Imp) Nelson.  Grandpa Wayno chipped as usual, featuring in a 63 run partnership with “the Imp” that saw the side limp to 171 off 68.

Whilst confident that enough runs were on the board, Coach Cam could not have predicted that the afternoon would unfold as it did – Bay all out for 50 off 51 and 8/57 off 40 in the second dig.  All bowlers were magnificent, but kudos must go to Matt (the Deedmeister) Diedrich for his match figures of 7 for 25 off 19 overs.

A blockbuster is looming in round 3 against the strong Broadbeach/Robina line up – be on the deck this coming Saturday to watch the drama unfold.

REGGIES

This match featured the debut of a youngster, the return of an old stager and the unveiling of arguably the worst hair cut ever perpetrated on a Bushman!

Sam (Stock Car Driver) Shepherd (3 scalps off 18 tidying overs) on debut, Swanny (also “3 for”), and cameos from Patto, Haydos and Gazza saw the Bay restricted to 197 on day 1.

The chase began on a sound basis with a number of good partnerships within the top order, but the match swung firmly in favour of the Bushmen with the appearance of Garry (yeah I’ve got plenty of spare time) Lovett (73 – that’s runs scored not age!!) and Shannon (2 pizzas) Patterson (44).

A total of 233 accurately underscored the Reggies domination of this match.  Pity the main talking point on the deck after the game was Gibbo’s haircut!

THREES - FERGY’S FANATICS

This game very much had a good vs evil feel to it as the noble Bushmen traveled to northern horizons in search of glory.

Fergy had his serial killer eyes spinning overtime in regaling the packed club rooms with the magnificent deeds of his troops in their quest to ward off the northern scourge on their home battle ground.

Tom (the Brick) Sutherland starred with bat, top scoring with 70, while handy contributions from a host of others lead to a more than competitive total of 251.

The northern devils were made to pay for their on field antics when dismissed for 78 (3 wickets falling in the first over) in the first innings and reduced to 7/108 in the second.

The “Brick” again starred with match figures of 4/25 off 14, while Aaron (the Arachnid) Alston spun a web of uncertainty in claiming 5 wickets.

THREES - WHITCHURCH’S WARRIORS

Whilst taking a bit of slap early, Deano’s Day Care team fought back strongly to dismiss Logan Village for 224.  Nick (Ben) Gentle the top wicket taker with 4.

The Chewbacca followed his first round 90 with a stylish 53, while the old stagers Deano and Johnny White contributed 62 and 31 respectively. Six wickets down, 30 runs to get and 2 batsmen at the crease with a combined age of less than John White’s keeping gloves, the opposition resorted to some high level sledging.  But in true Bushmen tradition, the youngsters Matt (Zac Efron) Shepherd and Gentle Ben prevailed.

A quick fire 40 from Tom (Harmy) Atkinson put the icing on the cake in the total of 297.

Having invited Logan Village to bat again, the boys were only a couple of wickets away from chasing a “gettable” total for an outright victory, when the game was unfortunately ended by the 24 drops of rain that came from an afternoon storm that missed the ground by several kilometres!!!

Round 1

4th Grade Blue Vs Surfers Paradise - Benowa

After winning the toss and batting the Blue team posted an impressive total of 235 in an even team performance headed by openers Andrew Griffin (48) and Luke Northam (29) with valuable contributions from Chris Nelson-Williams (30) and Shane Pinson (29).

This proved too great a task for Surfers as they succumbed to the pressure applied by Ryan Williams (4/25) with support later in the innings from Nathan Hillier (2/6 off 3 overs) dismissing the Demons for 110 to secure victory in 26 overs.

4th Grade Red Vs Helensvale- Pacific Pines

The Red team batsmen were on fire early as openers Bevan Marks and Michael Stork gained the upper hand with 65 and 26 respectively.  Impressive knocks in the middle order from Tom Cooper (66 off 57 balls including 9 fours) and Jared King (44 of 30 balls) helped the team reach an imposing score of 6 for 251 at the close.

Jared backed up his batting with a handy 2/16 with the ball in the early stages, whilst Peter Graham was the chief destroyer with 4/20 off his 7 overs, and then Corey Holder restricted the Hawks total to 119, finishing them off at the 29 over mark with 3/16 from his 3.4 over spell.

5th Grade Blue - Bye

5th Grade Red Vs Broadbeach-Robina

Broady started their innings well with some solid early partnerships, although opener Simon Alker chipped away at them early (3/38) to keep a reign on their scoring rate whilst Mitch Lovett (4/12 off 4) and Aldo Wesener (2/15) then helped restrict them to a gettable target of 9/191.

Dave Haupt had us on target early with an aggressive 77 off 64 balls eventually departing with the chase at 6/135 with support from Madison Bland (28) and Aaron Anderson (21). Mitch Lovett and Daniel Wesener then combined to post 26 valuable runs for the eighth wicket to get us within 10 of victory, only to loose the remaining wickets in quick succession to see us fall an agonising 3 runs short in the final over.

5th Grade White Vs 5th Grade Silver

The first Mudgee derby of the season saw the White team pitted against the aptly named Silver team which comprised 9 members of the De Silva family who were all making their debut for the club. Richard (45 n.o.), Kurt (29) and Matthew (20 n.o.) were the main contributors to Silver’s total of 7/175cc whilst Jazz McCallum (2/17) and Josh Gallacher (2/18) had the best figures for White’s bowling attack.

Opening bowling ring-ins Stuey Elliott (2/46) and Harley Rice (4/22) served the De Silvas well with Kurt also picking up a handy couple (2/20). Promising juniors Bryce Thomas (50) and Seb Jule (43) led a middle order revival for White with Evan Jones (34) also contributing much needed runs. Unfortunately for White victory was not to be as the De Silvas prevailed by 4 runs in another nail biter which saw the White team all out for 171 in the last over.

Round 2

4th Grade Blue Vs Tamborine Mountain

It was the second round blues for the Blue team as the bats failed to fire under pressure from the Mountain men who rolled us for 113. Some resistance was offered from Nathan Hillier (21), Shane Pinson (20) and Luke Northam (19) but 5 of the remaining bats failed to post double figure scores.

A united effort in the field included 5 catches and a run-out which aided the six bowlers used in restricting them reasonably well. We took 8 wickets before Tamborine eventually passed us with six overs to spare. Scott Mercer was the leading wicket taker with 3.

4th Grade Red Vs Runaway Bay Navy

Bevan Marks scored 48 to continue his batting form after the Bay sent us in at Nerang High School. Dave Johnstone made 27 on debut batting at number 5 whilst Joel “Sharkey” Wilson’s cameo of 20 n.o at the end saw the innings close with the total reaching a competitive 8/159.

Unfortunately our bowlers failed to penetrate as the Bay had amassed 92 runs when their second wicket fell. However we did manage another 5 wickets which included 2 run-outs before they passed us at the 33 over mark. Corey Holder gained the best bowling figures of 2/20 showing more promise after his performance in round 1.

5th Grade Blue Vs Broadbeach-Robina

This game was a massive run-fest as both teams carted the bowlers out of the park. We batted first and only needed five batsmen to amass a huge total of 330 by the compulsory close. The willow wielding was headed by Chris Nelson-Williams (89 n.o.) and supported by Steve Harrison (78), Graham Windt (70), Rob Gula (44) and Phil Holzinger (34).

Not to be outdone the Broady Boys slapped our bowlers hard as well, mounting a fantastic challenge only to fail by 10 runs at the close ending a memorable match. Stuey Elliott had the best figures of 3/38 off his 7 overs, whilst Chris featured again cementing “Man of the Match” with a cameo of 2/6 off 2, and Steve Harrison took an impressive 3 catches in the field.

5th Grade Red Vs Palm Beach-Currumbin Gold

Following last round’s close defeat, another disappointing day ensued for the Red team as our bats struggled to post a mere total of 65 off 22.1 overs. Opener Luke Alker made 23 and Aaron Anderson scored 17 batting at 5. The next highest score was 5.

Palmy lost 6 wickets in an easy chase with Marco Kroon joining Luke and Aaron in taking 2 wickets apiece in our bowling effort.

5th Grade White Vs Tamborine Mountain Green

Mirroring the Red team’s form after coming off a close loss, the White team also failed to fire well enough with the bat, posting a total of 107 off 24 overs underlining the value of batting out your full allotment of overs. Evan Jones, Daniel Wesener and Paul Goldman were the main contributors with 23 n.o, 21 and 20 respectively. Jack Wells took 2/33 with the ball as Tamborine passed us 7 down to secure their win. The 5 catches taken and the run-out we took also offers some encouragement to dust ourselves off for the next round.

5th Grade Silver Vs Burleigh Heads White

Skipper Kurt sent the Bullsharks into bat and soon had them reeling as we skittled them for 129. Greg Wilkinson took 3/36 and was ably supported by a host of others, including Richard with 2/20.

Our reply got off to a shaky start losing 3 quick wickets at the top, however opener Ronald (41 n.o) and Kurt (86 n.o) soon combined to see us cruise to an easy victory without further loss of wickets. Kurt’s majestic knock included 10 fours and 6 sixes which saw the day end with de “Silva” lining and in turn offered some early optimism that the De Silvas of Silver can win the silverware!

Round 3

4th Grade Blue Vs Southport-Labrador Yellow

TBA – our scores not completed in mycricket. SPLY won.

4th Grade Red Vs Southport-Labrador Gold

Traditional rivals SPL Gold strung a couple of good partnerships together as they were dismissed for 164 which is a fairly decent total at Nerang High. The best of the bowlers was Jared King taking 3 /25 with Luke Small 2/10 and Bevan Marks 2/32 as backup. Jared also led the main batting assault from the middle order when he was eventually run out for 58 making him the standout performer for us in this game. Other contributions came from Matt Gatt (25) Bevan Marks (21) and Joel “Sharkey” Wilson (18). However another close loss eventuated as the 10th wicket fell in the final over still 6 runs shy of a win.

5th Grade Blue Vs Coomera-Hope Island White

Even contributions from the first five bats saw us reach 10/216 in 32 overs in our clash with this team not expected to feature in finals action. The old firm of Gula, Windt, Nelson-Williams, Stone and Keys combined to relive recent glory days with respective scores of 22, 30, 19, 29 and 33. (That’s 29 for you Stoney if you’re having trouble matching that one up!)

Coomera failed to offer any real resistance when responding with an innings of 105 which included 4 ducks, 4 scores under 10, an extras total of 21 beating the combined total of their eight other batsmen, and finally a number 11 who made 33 n.o. Go figure! Justin Williams was the head bamboozler gaining 4 /16 with his Maxy Walker style loopy dipping hand-grenades and A. (Ashley) Job did a job with 3/52.

5th Grade Red Vs Palm Beach-Currumbin Maroon

After suffering consecutive losses in the previous rounds the Red team bounced back with an emphatic performance on Neilsen’s 3 to secure a dominant win against the generally weaker of the two Palmy teams. Aaron Anderson smashed 76 off 50 balls in an innings from the number 5 spot which included 9 fours and 4 sixes, not forgetting that Dave Haupt and Madison Bland started the momentum with scores of 30 and 45 at the top of the order. A few others played supporting roles as we reached 5/224cc.

Skipper Simon Alker then turned in a magnificent spell of bowling taking 6/26 off 6.3 overs to absolutely demolish the opposition for a paltry 43 runs. The only other Bushman required was Scott Mercer who took 2/17 off 6 helping secure an early march up onto the deck so Simon and Haupty could enjoy a few celebratory beers before the sun went down and Scotty and the other kids could start slurping down their lolly water!

5th Grade White Vs Coomera-Hope Island Blue

37 from the “Fishman” Phil O’Connor and another good contribution of 21 from youngster Daniel Wesener helped restore some faith from the last round with a total of 134 however Coomera had reeled us in by the 30th over with the loss of only 7 wickets with Mitch Goldman taking 2/23 with the ball. Encouraging signs suggest a win is just around the corner.

5th Grade Silver Vs Burleigh Heads Maroon

Consistent performances from Kurt, who made an unbeaten 54 in this match, together with opener Ronald, who delivered another good knock of 37, are proving to be potent weapons in the Silver team’s batting arsenal.

Responding to our score of 6/158 saw Burleigh wilt under pressure from the tight bowling of Harley Rice who took 3/23 and Matthew who chimed in with 3/22 to have them all out for 122. 3 out of 3 wins has the De Silvas eyeing off a spot near the top of the ladder!

Round 4

4th Grade Blue

TBA – scores not complete in my cricket  - we lost

4th Grade Red Vs Surfers Paradise-Benowa

Whilst the wickets were shared, our bowlers conceded too many runs allowing the batting team to gain a score of 9/251cc. A guest appearance by Matt Robbins saw him top the figures with 2 /33 off 6. Jared King and Bevan Marks also chimed in with 2 each. In reply, Bevan Marks started well again with a quick fire 36 off 18 balls and Michael Stork with 36 off 26 had us in the hunt, but the loss of too many of the other bats in the top order left too much to do for Matty Gatt (45 n.o) and Sharkey Wilson (44) as we slumped to be all out for 202 in the 30th over.

5th Grade Blue Vs Palm Beach-Currumbin Maroon

An easy day at the park for the old firm as Justin Williams and Stuey Elliott dominated the weak Maroon line-up taking 3 apiece to have them on the ropes early. Shaun Lyons who bowled first change continued the carnage with 4/16 off his six to claim the top figures.

Graham Windt scored 35 with Rob Gula making 22 in support made short work of their attack which helped us reach their score of 86, passing them in the 12th over with the loss of only 3 wickets. Training a bit longer than they drink has the dividends coming thick and fast as these boys are starting to hit their straps.

5th Grade Red Vs Surfers Paradise-Benowa

It was hard to think the Red team could better their fervent win from last week, but that was exactly the case as our batsmen sent the Demon bowlers back down to hell in amassing a crushing total of 6/343 off our 35 overs, and therefore cementing a total form reversal from their losses in the earlier rounds. Congratulations to Haupty on scoring his maiden ton (115 off 73 balls) and I was reliably informed that Luke Alker showed technique and maturity beyond his years to score a blistering 80 off 47 balls. Their efforts saw Surfers yield a staggering 174 partnership for the first wicket whilst Michael Abra added a further 47 coming in at number 3.

Matthew Blewett (4/31) and Mitch Lovett (3/42) took the bowling honors as Surfers were dismissed for 158 handing our boys their second win in a row. Big high fives all round!

5th Grade White Vs Loganholme

Finally some joy for the White team as they ventured out to the Windaroo Rugby Club to meet the Cobras. The road trip must have united them as the Bushman waved their axes to post an imposing total of 7/288. Stephen Jones scored a great 121 in the number 2 spot, evergreen Aldo Wesener belted them around in the middle with a fine 80 and the “Fish” Phil O’Connor saw them through to the end with a solid 37 n.o. That’s more like it boys!

The boys from Logan were no match falling for 129. Opportunities with the ball for us were shared among 10 bowlers with Paul “Goldy” Goldman and Dan Wesener both getting 2 each for very little. Well done to all!

5th Grade Silver Vs Tamborine Mountain Green

A slight return to earth for the previously undefeated De Silvas of Silver as Tamborine chased down the 147 we posted within 24 overs. Keeper Roger and stand-in skip Richard featured with 36 and 30 respectively and best with the ball was Matthew with 3/14. Hopefully the return of standouts Kurt and Ronald in the near future will help put our favorite Jamaicans back on top very shortly.
