The momentum continues! Another great fortnight for the Bushmen, highlighted by the Ones and Reggies continuing on their winning ways.
We also welcomed back Barack Obama from his fact finding mission through Europe.
ONES
After being invited to bat first against a strong Broady attack, the Bushmen were stoic in reaching a total of 8/222 off 75 overs. All batsmen getting start, but unfortunately no one went on to capitalise with a big innings. The return of Garry (The Silver Fox) Lovett gives the top order a more solid look (and boosts the average age of the side significantly!!).
A handy 46 opening stand between Dan (The Chaffer) Swan and Dylan (Tic Toc) McLaughlin and a 50 partnership for the young lions Josh and Hainy highlighted the innings.
Despite not bowling up their own lofty standards, the boys banished the powerful Broady batting line up for a paltry 118 prior to tea. Doogs and Blakey doing the damage with 7 wickets between them.
To steal a line from the movie Pulp Fiction ….“That’s how you are going to win boys – let them keep underestimating you”.
3 from 3 – you beauty!!!
REGGIES
The appointment of a new skipper, the debut of the Chewbacca, the inclusion of the Bundy Bear for the first week and the return of Jake (The Wildman) Savage saw the Reggies full of confidence traveling east to take on Broady on their home turf. Sentiments changed somewhat with the team back in the sheds for a disappointing 104 off 48 overs.
Matty (The Bear) Swan making the most of his cameo appearance, top scored with 21.
The undefeated Broady side would have no doubt have been confidently looking for a sizable first innings lead at the end of play. But through the efforts of the new skipper Robbie (Side Show) Swan returning the magnificent figures of 8/17, Broady crumbled like a cardboard cubby house in a cyclone – all out for 42 in less than 16 overs.
Despite being 3/13 at the end of the first days play, Beefy Stimpson, Luke Fryer, Chewy and 2 Pizzas Patto all batted well to enable Swanny to declare 200 in front on day 2.
The Broady boys showed more determination in the second dig, but were no match for the Wildman, with Jakey taking 7 second innings wickets for a match return of 9/67. An outright victory after scoring just 104 batting first, was truly a great effort.
Fantastic – 3 and 0 and following the example set by “big brothers” the ones.
THREES - FERGY’S FANATICS
After a month long northern sojourn, the boys were pleased to finally play at the Neilsen’s Road fortress. Unfortunately the match result did not quite reward the effort in this game.
Coomera Hope Island Blue powered through to 9/259 on day one, with 4 of the Bushmen bowlers taking 2 wickets or better. The standard of catching was not up to scratch and this will be area that skipper Fergy will no doubt be focusing on during the week.
Christmas in November??? Davis (Xmas) Carroll wowed the masses with his sublime innings of 107, his first ton in Bushmen colours. Good support through the middle order from Jason (The Mute) Bear on debut, Luke (The Shirt) Watson and Tommy (The Brick) Sutherland saw the score on 8/212 when Xmas was dismissed.
Despite a great rear guard innings of 34no from Sammy (Mike’s brother) Hunt, the Blue Boys fell an agonising 3 runs short.
Better days are ahead boys!!!
THREES - WHITCHURCH’S WARRIORS
Palmy are always strong in 3s, and our opponents appeared to be carrying on this tradition by scoring 373 against SPL the game before.
But the Kindy Kids (average age of just 17 – excluding the cagey veteran Johnny White) pay no minds to reputations and dismissed PBC for just 175. This was particularly meritorious, as one of the Palmy boys scored a ton. All bowlers contributed with the wickets evenly spread.
As with the Blue Boys, the run chase fell just short - 15 runs. Plenty of starts, with no one going on to get the big score that was needed to get the team across the line.
Dobbing Palmy back in to bat, the boys had the home team 7/125 when stumps were drawn. Matt (Zac) Shepherd and Paul (Muffin) Atkinson were the pick of the bowlers with match tallies of 6 and 5 wickets respectively.
Great effort boys – as a famous man once said “from defeat comes knowledge”!!!
Round 5
4th Grade Blue Vs Palm Beach-Currumbin
Number 3 Daine Williams top scored with 48 as the Blue team set Palmy a daunting score of 171 on the slow outfield of Darcy Doyle. Six other Bushmen reached double figures, the best being Robbie Miller with 26 and Chris Moke with 22.
Daine then joined brother Ryan to spearhead the bowling attack to turn in a display that one could only imagine as sibling rivalry on steroids. They went wicket for wicket to each claim 5 at the end of their allotted 7 over spells dismissing the old enemy for only 26 runs. Forget Venus and Serena, the Williams “Brothers” are the hottest double act right now! Andrew Grifffin didn’t let them down either taking 3 fine catches behind the stumps.
4th Grade Red Vs Tamborine Mountain
A couple of early wickets from Jared King and Jason Maughan had Tamborine on the ropes early at Nerang High School. Bevan Marks took 3 for 35 in the middle overs and Luke Small also held them up with an economical 1/16 off his 7, but Tamborine still managed to consolidate and ultimately post a very good total of 8/200cc.
Matty Gatt continued his run of good form to top score with 35 but sadly the support from his teammates didn’t eventuate as the other six bats in the top order contributed a total of 16 runs. 2 wins from 5 outings sees the Red team back to the drawing board.
5th Grade Blue – Surfers Paradise Benowa
Who needs youth and beauty when you keep smackin’ up scores over 300 in a one day comp! Rob Gula’s 76 was handsome, Chris Nelson-Williams impressed his lady with 56 and Phil Holzinger’s 92 was a “knockout” (actually his “not out” included 13 fours and 4 sixes). Rob and Chris also got among the wickets with 3/34 and 2/49 joining opener Stuey Elliott who finished with 2/32 to dismiss Surfers for 190 to keep the winning streak going. Another model performance!!
5th Grade Red Vs Southport Labrador Gold
Scott Mercer took 2/26 but most of the other bowlers got smashed as the opposition amassed 6/276 on Neilsen’s 3. The task was too great but we managed a respectable response of 8/214cc. Consistent performers Madison Bland (69), Dave Haupt (47) and Luke Alker (39) were our best and engender optimism for a swift return to the winners circle.
5th Grade White Vs Broadbeach-Robina
Broadbeach elected to bat out at Gilston which saw Daniel Wesener commence proceedings with the ball and gain the upper hand with 3/15 off 4 overs. Mitch Goldman must have had them all jammed up conceding only 8 runs off his 7 overs to be rewarded with 2 wickets. Dad Paul and Phil the Fishman hooked 2 each also but the runs were leaking at the end as they reached 189.
Steve Jones batting at 3 had us in the hunt early making a fine 78 and when Aldo joined him to chalk up his 55, hopes would have been high, but sadly in the end we ran out of overs and wickets to fall 12 runs short in another close one.
5th Grade Silver Vs Coomera-Hope Island Blue
This week’s mission saw Captain Kurt return to the Enterprise only to see his team’s batting form completely disappear down a black hole. Our bats made a line for the sickbay as Coomera blasted us out for the sorry total of 21.They then shifted into warp drive passing us in 1.5 overs prompting Kurt to flip out the teleporter in no time at all. “Beam me up Scotty!!”
Round 6
4th Grade Blue Vs Loganholme
When Ryan Williams and Nathan Ireland struck early with the ball, the Cobras were struggling at 4 for 41, but a middle order stand of 95 saw them reach 5/153cc .Nathan finished with best figures of 3/24. Unfortunately last week’s batting form deserted us as we capitulated for 83 without significant resistance from anyone, leaving the team with 4 losses from six games.
4th Grade Red Vs Southport Labrador Yellow
Southport elected to bat and built a good score from a few steady partnerships seeing them to the close with 8 for 178. Jared King was among the wickets again with 3/39 ably supported by Dave Johnstone with his 2/ 27. In reply Bevan Marks, Matt Kilborn and Michael Stork all got into the twenties but without anyone continuing on to post a big score we were soon struggling at 8/115.Then Dave and Jared featured again batting at 8 & 9 with some quick fire hitting seeing us crash back into contention, but when Dave departed with the score on 152 for a rapid 30 off 21 balls, Jared and skipper Keith Amos had a bit too much to do in the final couple of overs which saw us end with 167. Jared remained not out with 21 from 14 balls leaving him and Dave as our stand out performers in this match.
The only other reason to smile was the comical demise of poor Sharkey who after playing a windy woosh of an air shot was found tangled and prostrate at the crease only to see the ball trickle towards the stumps. Since his bat was somewhere near his legs his only reaction was to grab the ball with his hand, constituting the dismissal of “handled ball”. After realising his fate he apparently walked without bothering the umpire to adjudicate, albeit with a rather large but resigned smile on his face.
5th Grade Blue Vs Southport Labrador Gold
Shaun Lyons had a good day with the ball taking 3/51 off his 7 overs which was still reasonably economical considering the confines of the ground at Southport State School. Several others chipped in one each and Ash Job got 2/66 off his seven also, seeing them set us a target of 224. Unfortunately Rob Gula copped a ball on the thumb in the field which saw him bandaged up and unable to bat. The target still proved to be no challenge for these hotshots as Ash Keys (62) joined regular opener Graham Windt (79) for a great 1st wicket stand of 158. Stuey Elliott, Chris Nelson-Williams and Phil Holzinger were the only others required as they all reached double figures to see us comfortably home in the 29th over. At 6 from 6 it’s all too easy so far. Keep it rollin’ boys!
5th Grade Red Vs Southport Labrador Black
A ninth wicket stand of 71 between Scott Mercer and Mitch Lovett was the only reason we reached 111 and had any reasonable target to set Southport in a worrying display from the top order. Scott ended with 45 and Mitch was 21 n.o. from 61 balls at the close showing great resilience for a young player. Mitch was also our only wicket taker as Southport dominated our bowlers to pass our score in 14.1 overs.
5th Grade White Vs 5th Grade Silver
In another derby Aldo won the toss and sent the De Silvas in which did not turn out so good for the white team as Captain Kurt rebounded from last weeks disastrous display with a magnificent 103 which included 13 fours and 5 sixes. Keeper Roger and junior Bryce Douglas added support with 26 and 24 n.o to see the total reach 4/201 with no real significant reward for the white team’s bowlers. Then Bryce (4/15) and his two other imported under 17s buddies in Ryan Battersby (3/19) and Dylan Richmond (2/8) combined to annihilate the older guard of the white team when another junior Jack Wells combined with Jill Shepherd to be the only ones showing any pluck for White with 39 and 20, giving the Silvas an 84 run victory.
